When a receipt or photo is uploaded, ItemRecover generates a SHA-256 cryptographic hash of the file combined with the upload timestamp and the user's account ID. This hash is stored immutably at the moment of upload. If the file is ever modified — even by a single pixel — the hash will no longer match, making retroactive forgery immediately detectable. Because the hash is created at time of purchase, a policyholder cannot credibly upload a receipt today and claim it's from 2022. The proof is anchored in time.
